Coaching At Big Regattas By Alejandro Sole

Big regattas are for both, sailors and coaches, the biggest challenge.
During that event the sailor will try to perform at his best level, and the coach, help him to excel his goals.
There are a lot of things to be careful when coaching at regattas.

The good news is that there are a lot of things you can do to help your sailor perform at his best, the bad thing, is that you can also do a lot of things, that will not help him at all.
The first thing to be careful about is that, at this time, you are a coach, and no longer an instructor.
It is not the time to try to make him increase his level, it is the time to make it perform at his best.
Correcting sailing technique at this time, it is not a good idea.
You can still correct small details, but if you try to make him change something important in his technique, his confidence will decrease, and he will not perform.
If you find that your sailor is making some technique mistakes that you want to work on, then you should write them down and work on that during practice or small events.
The most important part in coaching at big events, its working with their confidence.
Their performance will depend mostly on this.
Motivation, is the key for success, and we should mostly concentrate on this part.
Each sailors is different, and that is why it is very important to be dedicated and to have a good idea of how to motivate each kid, so they can all perform in a great level.

Providing Information Vs. Giving Instructions
There are a lot of coaches that tell their sailors what side of the course they should go to.
This is the biggest mistake that a coach can make.
Always remember that Optimist Sailing is a learning boat, and that is exactly what they are doing.
There are also a lot of problems when telling your sailors what to do:
・Conditions will probably change during the race, and you will not be there to help them
・You might not have the best information, as you are not sailing, you are in a coach boat
・If it doesn't work, sailors will blame it in the coach, when is them the ones that are taking the decisions.
And they should be learning from their mistakes.
・The sailors will not understand why they are going to that side, and as a consequence they will not be learning
・If conditions change, and they don't know the facts that are making them go to somewhere on the course:
They will not be able to analyze the new situation and adapt their strategy and Tactics to their new condition
Providing information and letting them take their own decisions is the best way to help them . In this way they will learn, and they will also know what kind of risks they are taking.

What I try to do when I coach at big events:
1. Make the team try the course and get as much information as they can
2. Compare the information each of them got, to the one I have.
3. Share the information and discuss the differences with the sailors
4. Analise the different Facts:
・Current
・Wind
・Shifts
・Clouds
・Course Setup
5. Once that we have all this information let them build their own strategy.
6. Talk about that strategy:Good Points, Weak Points.
7. Let them decide what they will do, and support their decisions, when they have strong arguments to take them . Remember that you inspire confidence.

During the Race:
At this time we have to observe different things, so when the race is over we can comment, and try not to make the same mistakes on the next race.
This are the things you should be looking at:
・What are the leaders of the fleet doing
・If your sailors have enough speed
・What are the biggest mistakes they are doing
・How are the conditions changing through the day.
・What are the best things your sailors are doing

Going into the next race:
Once the race is over you are going to have the chance of talking to your sailor for some time.
Remember that if he is not talking to you he could be trying the course, and getting information about the winds.
So it is important that you use your time to help him get into the next race.
Kids usually having a bad or a good race, stay thinking about what happened, instead of start thinking in what is going to happened in the next race.
Always help them at this point, to only think ahead, and to get ready for the next one, even if they had a bad race.
Make sure that they are well hydrated, that they are not cold or hot, that the equipment is in good conditiones, that they had something to it, and THAT THEY ARE MENTALLY READY.

After Racing:
This is better time to correct things.
Now their heads are cold, and they can analise their mistakes in a more objective way.
You can now, be a little bit tougher with them.
But always remember one thing.
THEY HAVE RACING THE NEXT DAY.
So always try to finish the meetings with a positive message, and have them motivate, so they go out the next day, with even more will to win!.
Good Luck!

4.(Analyze)

Good Luck!

How to Make A Sailing Session Efficient
By Alejandro Sole

When designing a practice there are several things that I like to remember in order to make sure that the practice is as good as it can be. At the same time there are a lot of things to define, and this will depend, on the quality of the sailors, the number of sailors, the conditions, the motivation they have, and the proximity to important future events.

1)Amount of Time: “Quality over quantity”. For me this is extremely important to have it in mind at all times. You can spend 6, 8 hours in the water and learn nothing. Instead you can spend 3 hours, and make sure that the kids are learning from every second out there.

One Session: If it is only one session I like to “practice” for around 4 hours. Counting from the moment that the first drill starts. Longer than that kids start loosing concentration and performance start to decline

Two Sessions: I think this is the best alternative.. Sailing 3 hours, having lunch in Land and then having a second session of another 3 hours. With this alternative you have the possibility of correcting mistakes on land , where kids can listen and understand more than in the water, see videos, and have them rest for some time.

2) Selecting Drills:

Things to consider when selecting the drills to do in the water.

  • Priority N 1:Taking the most advantage over the sailing conditions
  • Number of Sailors:
    • Small Amount:Concentrate on Technique, as you can spend more time on each sailor
    • Big Group:Starts, Tactics, Races.
  • Drills:
    • Use drills that will make the kids concentrate on specific Parts of a Race
    • Choose drills that have a relationship between them.
    • Choose drills that will motivate sailors.
    • Try to have a drill or a race at the end that will put together each little thing learned on every drill.

3) Explaining Drills:

One of the problems that I faced when I started working with drills, was that a lot of sailors, where just following the instructions of the drill. But they were not trying to understand why we were using those drills. Each drill is design, to have the sailors concentrate on one specific part of the race. If they don’t understand this, then the drills are useless. It is very important that they know the reasons why they are doing this drills, and that they understand that when doing certain drills, they have to concentrate on specific things, to get the most out of it.

       “Meaning of the Drills”

       Not just modified courses

       Concentrating on certain Items

4) Making a Plan, but be flexible

Always desing a plan on land, and try to follow it as much as possible.

Remember: Changing plans in the water always makes you loose time, and have sailors get confused

Also Remember: If you made a plan and the sailors are not learning from the practice. STOP THE PRACTICE; It’s a waist of time….. Re program. And start again.

5)Debriefing:

  • Good and bad things of the practice
  • Never too long, try to say the 3 things that were worst of all. Always say the important things in the beginning and in the end. You find out that at that time they are paying the most of attention
  • Always leave a positive message for the end. They have to be motivated to go to the water the next day

TIPS:

  • The more they enjoy the practice the harder they will work
  • Try to make them keep in mind why they are doing this: They want to be World Champions? National Champions?
  • Always better Good than long
  • Congratulate the effort, not only the results.
  • Keep the group together, the better the group gets, the better they all sail

This is just a guide of what I will develop during the talk…

  • At the end of the Talk, I will design together with the audience , different practices with different conditions. To see what there thoughts are, and share mine.
  • I will also talk a little bit, but depending on time about Coaching at Big Events.

I will need, a marker and a board, to write things on it.

Kind Regards…

Always better Good than long
